Factal’s 2023 year in review

Factal's web app and phone app in the foreground; a light gray world map of incidents in the background.

We hope you survived yet another incredibly busy year. Our heads are still spinning, but we’ve gathered some metrics to share some quick highlights of Factal’s global coverage, product innovations and member successes for 2023.

Coverage dominated by conflict

Unfortunately these days, conflicts don’t go away. New ones stack on top of the old ones, and this year was no exception. We ranked the top 10 global events of the year by counting the total number of updates published by Factal’s editors over the year:

  1. Israel-Hamas conflict
  2. Ukraine-Russia conflict
  3. Sudan military coup
  4. Syrian conflict
  5. Turkey-Syria earthquakes
  6. French pension reform
  7. Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict
  8. Anti-government protests in Peru
  9. Myanmar civil war
  10. Coup in Niger

If you add up all of Factal’s verified updates, the Israel-Hamas and Ukraine-Russia conflicts comprise 20 percent of the total. Not surprisingly, they’re also our most-visited and most-followed topics across the many thousands of news events published in 2023.

Amid all the updates, we also published more than 2,200 editor’s notes to help Factal members decipher conflicting information and make sense of what’s happening. In a new addition, editors now host “Ask Me Anything” video chats to provide a deeper look at evolving crises.

Let’s hope 2024 doesn’t add any more major conflicts to the list. We know you’d appreciate it, and our editors certainly would, too.

Innovative new products and partnerships

While Factal’s editors cover the world, our product and technology teams have been busy creating innovative new products. Over the last few months, we launched Mentions (generative AI-powered brand and threat monitoring), Incident Chat (chat that connects companies in proximity to the same incident) and Topic Sets (precise controls to reduce noise in feeds and notifications). We’ve also more than doubled the amount of data coming into the Factal platform, adding new social media and weather sources to provide more granular coverage on a hyperlocal level.

On the partnership front, we’re excited to add both Vismo and Everywhere Communications to our incredible list of integration partners. We also teamed up with GISF to make it easier for humanitarian aid and disaster response NGOs to get free, fast-tracked access to Factal.

Lots of member success stories

From NGOs to corporate security and business continuity teams, we’re especially proud of our members. Nearly 300 NGOs rely on Factal, and aid teams are on the ground in the world’s most dangerous places from Gaza to Ukraine, Sudan to Syria. Every week, the Factal app is opened in more than 100 countries as our membership continues to grow.

While we talk with our members every day, some are happy to talk publicly about Factal. We’ve published case studies from Salesforce (Factal is “as important as our phone system”) and Atmos Energy (Factal chat is “worth its weight in gold”). We’re also excited to see a growing number of five-star reviews on Factal’s G2 page (Factal has “unrivaled customer service.”) Thank you all for the kind comments.

We’re excited for our 2024 roadmap. We’ve been working on several new products, partnerships, member stories and events, and we can’t wait to share them with you. Our sincere thanks to our members and partners for helping make this year a success.
