The Debrief: History repeats itself in Venezuela

The image depicts a large-scale protest taking place on a city street densely packed with people. The crowd stretches far into the background, filling the street in front of tall office buildings and apartments. Many participants are holding Venezuelan flags, creating a sense of unity and national pride among the protesters. The flags are vibrant with horizontal stripes of yellow, blue, and red with stars. Among the crowd, some individuals are holding umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun, while others have cameras and mobile phones raised, capturing the event. The sky is mostly clear with a few scattered clouds, indicating a sunny day. Trees line one side of the street, offering some greenery amidst the urban environment.

President Nicolás Maduro’s contested victory on July 28 is more evidence of the dwindling power of the opposition inside the country over the past few years, making it easier for the autocratic leader to maintain his grip. Yet, the fight is far from over with opposition leader María Corina Machado adamant exiled candidate Edmundo González will be sworn in January.
